MICRO PUBLIC PLACE

PERSONAL

STUDIO

Micro Public Place is a design thought that concentrates on the function as a catalyst in public space, especially in the process of urban renewal. Based on the idea of the phenomenology of architecture, I divides the definition of Micro Public Place into three parts: object, activity, and space. Object directs to the physical demands while activity directs to the spiritual needs, and space concerns on the site atmosphere.

As a specific example to show how Micro Public Place could help to improve the quality of public space, I use Narinkka Square in Helsinki as a case study. Narinkka Square locates in the heart part of Helsinki, and it stands in front of Kamppi center which works as a shopping center, also as a public transportation center for subway, bus, tram, and coach. Except for the functions to guide people leave and arrive at Kamppi center, Narinkka Square also works as a place to hold different public activities, concert and market as examples. As the objects of Micro Public Place, the redesigns of the benches, market tents, plants, trash bins, pavement and bicycle parking areas in Narinkka Square will be proposed.
